Domestic violence

One of the reasons I like Aamir Khan's reality show "Satyamev Jayate" is because it features real problems in Indian society. Real life testimonies come on stage, recording and online shows.

Yesterday we watched on Domestic Violence. While many people believe the danger for women is outside their home, it is not. Most dangers at home. Especially among the middle class. No wonder the Urban India Ministries in India and Focus on the Family in the USA are such a crucial ministry to build families.

Few things I learned from this show. At practical level,

  • Tell other people - family, neighbours, friends, church pastors for Christians - the first time you are beaten.
  • If possible, return with a huge blow so that the attacker almost collapse. That way he will know the pain you endure.
  • If you are beaten, especially for married women, never believe that he will stop beating as the years go by. It doesn't happen that way. They won't stop. Listen to testimonies of two ladies in this show - both married upto 16 years and had to leave.
Here is sure to work solution in my village. If a person beats his wife, his family will go and warn that fellow, if he beats again, his bones will be broken. I worked most of the time!!

Legally, there is Chief Judiciary Magistrate at the district level. They can help you if you are a victim, even if police do not help or take your complaints.
